Bravos, interesting post. As a general rule of thumb in the domestic newspaper business about 70% of expenses are related to production and distribution of the dead tree stuff. These expenses continue to increase year after year. News print, operating press and fleet are very expensive. 		<description>A good test for the editorial team and management:  would they have used that headline for the men's team?  Didn't think so.

And, "meant no harm" is no excuse for poor editorial judgment.  That's bad performance.  Management is under-reacting.</description>

Statesman (@statesman) uses their Twitter.

They use different editors and reporters to fill in the time and converse with their readers. Granted, they're located in a much more tech-friendly town, but they're pushing 1400 followers and work the Twitter about 10 hours/day.

		<description>I would second the part about not turning your Twitter account into an RSS feed. I personally feel too many newspapers are simply automating their Twitter feeds. That's fine for some people, but I think the beauty of Twitter is hearing from real people.

CNN Breaking news @cnnbrk is one that seems to do a good job. They tweet only once in a while and it's a human that does it. He even leaves personal notes once in a while.

There are a few others out there, but not too many.</description>

While journalism can do that, we (well, I) tend to dislike journalism which is seen to be selling something.
